How to use DS Photo to show "complex" homemovies on your iPad by converting?

Hi there,

At the moment I’m a bit at a loss how to convert homemovie files for iPad.

What I want is this: I want to be able to show my homemade photo’s and video’s that I have stored on my Diskstation to my guests on my iPad. I do this just in my own home, over my own Wifi-network. This works fine for photo files (using either DS Photo or DS File), but the MPG’s recorded by my Sony Handicam are a bit too much to be streamed from the NAS to my iPad.

Well, two years ago I did as the folks at Synology advised me: I uploaded the mpg’s recorded by my Sony handycam, and chose the option “mobile”, thus having them converted, in order to be able to view them on my iPad. Those “converted” homevideo’s were stored in a separate folder on my NAS. It was a hassle because I had to convert files before I could show them using my iPad (therefore I kept on yapping about DS Video), but at least it worked.

Now I use DSM 4.2, and Photostation has a whole new look. I tried uploading a file from my computer (default option is to “current album”?), but I didn’t know where it went (finally had to look it up using the search option and the file’s name, found it and deleted it, wherever it was). And worst of all: I couldn’t find the “mobile” option that converts during the upload.

Can you guys help me out here? I want to be able to use my iPad again for showing those MPG’s please.

You can try the application DSVideo from Synology. This application is made for video files and converting video's. it can stream DVD's to my mobile phone, even via my mobile Telecom provider.

Thanks for your response. I tried using DS Video, but it doesn't do what I think it should do, that is be an actual player. It seems more of an organizing tool. When I click on a movie, it opens up OPlayer and OPlayer plays/ tries to play the movie at hand.

Still, I added the folder containing my home movies (the aforementioned mpg's recorded by my Sony Handicam) in Videostation. Videostation says it is indexing them, but when I open the folder "Home movies" (either in Videostation on my PC, or on DS Video on my iPad) it says it's empty!

I read your "success-story" about Videostation (streaming movie by 3GPS! Holy cow!), I can't help but think I'm doing something wrong...

Maybe it's the fact that I have a ds110j, a 128 NAS, maybe it's just not powerful enough for this? That would be a shame...

I thought I had a bypass: I accessed Photo station through the mobile version of DSM, and made a shortcut for that. Within Photostation I could navigate throug my Sony MPG's. But just when I thought that I'd struck gold (I just HATE those moments) everything fell apart once again: the icon over the MPG indicated that it couldn't be played. It plays fine (albeit in low resolution) when I open it on my PC.

There's got to be a reasonable solution for this, right?

UPDATE:

Now DS Video has indexed my collection of homemade MPG's, I'm able to open them "by map". Yeah. They even have a nice looking thumbnail.

But still, when I try to open one of these movie files, the DS Video app suddenly shifts to oPlayer and has that app try to open it, which it can't...

Some help would still be nice...
